As we celebrate the State of Illinois’ 200th year, we have set a goal of celebrating 200 people from our region. As we work to build our collection for the future generations, it is clear that we need to actively document this ever-changing world!
This exhibit will celebrate the people and their accomplishments in our state and in particular, in our region. Using artifacts from our collection to illustrate their stories, we will paint a portrait of everyday life, including the challenges and successes of our community. The exhibit will be on display for the entire bicentennial year with new additions each month. Visit often and learn more about those who impacted our community.
The use of oral histories has become one of our tools to capture local history. Much of what these conversations do is to talk about how significant events and changes affect those that live through them in our region. Recording people’s impressions and descriptions of events provide another layer of understanding, such as regional cultural practices, interpretations, feelings, and opinions. They are the stories that are not being collected by anyone else and we are keenly aware of the importance of filling this role.
