Remembering our Community’s Vietnam Era Veterans

November 9, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Western Illinois Museum is pleased to join with the WIU Alumni Association, WIU President Jack Thomas and Macomb Mayor Mike Inman to celebrate Military Appreciation week. On Thursday, November 9, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, the museum will open its doors for a social where community members and veterans can come together to remember those who have served our country. This complimentary social will include appetizers and a cash bar. A short program will be held.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, a selection from the museum’s oral history collection recorded with veterans from that conflict will be on view. For the last six years, the museum’s oral history program has given a voice to the legacy of men and women from West Central Illinois who served in the armed forces. At the heart of the project is an interest of providing veterans an opportunity to share their experiences as a way to build community, as well as for others to gain insights. Often individual stories are not a part of current conversation or the historical narrative that surrounds conflicts. Veterans’ experiences in the armed services constitute a valuable treasure that the museum wishes to preserve for future generations. Guests will be invited to listen to the recordings as a way to learn more about and support local our veterans.

Military Appreciation Week activities are sponsored by the WIU Alumni Association; Casa Latina; the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research; the College of Arts and Sciences; the College of Fine Arts and Communication; the departments of broadcasting and journalism, English, history, military science, music and political science; School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach; the WIU Film Club; the Foundation Veterans Fund; the Veterans Resource Center, the interdisciplinary film minor; the University Counseling Center, the University Research Council; the WIU Vets Club and the WIU Women’s Center.
