Raising Corn: The Story of a Crop

IMG_0948Our exhibit, Raising Corn: The Story of a Crop will be on view from August 2, 2016, to January 7, 2017.

Since its founding, corn has played a role in McDonough County. This exhibit includes a compelling mix of artifacts from the museum’s collection that illustrate various themes including changes to agricultural equipment. IMG_0964_smThe Brown Corn Planter, pictured to the right, was invented in 1853 by George Brown of Knox County and dramatically changed corn production in the Midwest. The introduction of his horse-drawn corn planter allowed farmers to plant as much as ten to twenty acres of corn in a day, IMG_0967dramatically increasing the size of fields and corn yields on the farm. Other topics in the exhibit include a look at local programs and organizations centered on corn production and the wide variety of by-products from the crop.
